1. Wuffing Education Online Study-Days and Live Study-Mornings 2024 (more events to follow)
Friday 12th July 2024: Beowulf and the Forgotten Pre-History of the English-Speaking Peoples – an online study-day with Dr Sam Newton FSA aiming to map something of the historical roots of the heroic legends in Beowulf.
Saturday 10th August 2024: The Battle of Maldon (10th August 991) – an online study-day with Dr Sam Newton FSA. This battle was the first major defeat for an English army in generations. Fortunately, we can supplement the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle’s brief mention with the greatest of surviving Old English battle-poems. Using my edition and translation, we shall follow its vivid account and consider the way in which it infuses a heroic defeat with the sprit of unyielding resistance to the invader. We shall also consider the clues it provides as to the precise location of the battle.
Saturday 21st September 2024: Life-Lore: Old English Proverbs and Wisdom Literature – an online study-day with Dr Eleanor Parker (Brasenose College, Oxford) exploring the world of the Old English-speaking peoples through their traditions of wisdom literature.
Friday 11th October 2024: A Landscape History of “Greater East Anglia” – an online study-day with Edward Martin FSA exploring the ways in which we can read the history of the landscape between the Wash and the Thames estuary.
Friday 18th October 2024: The Battle of Assandún (18th October 1016) – an online study-day with Dr Sam Newton FSA on the anniversary of the battle that is least as important in English history as the the Battle of Hastings 50 years later.

25th October 2024: The Battle of Agincourt (25th October 1415) – a live study-morning on the anniversary of this famous battle with world-class scholar Dr Toby Capwell;
Friday 15th November: The Battle of the River Winwæd (15th November 655) – an online study-day with Dr Sam Newton FSA on the anniversary of the battle that defeated the last of the pre-Christian overlords of England.
Friday 22nd November 2024: The Viking Great Armies in England, 865-879 -an online study-daywithDr Gareth Williams FSA exploring the size and character of the Viking armies of the mid-ninth century and how they were able to defeat and conquer major established kingdoms. we shall also consider their activities indirectly shaped the character of Viking settlement in the Danelaw in a way that was neither typically Anglo-Saxon nor Scandinavian.
