{"id":161,"date":"2014-01-23T18:19:57","date_gmt":"2014-01-23T18:19:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wuffings.co.uk\/?page_id=161"},"modified":"2024-02-13T15:05:42","modified_gmt":"2024-02-13T15:05:42","slug":"raedwald","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wuffings.co.uk\/index.php\/wuffing-resources\/raedwald\/","title":{"rendered":"R\u00e6dwald (died c.624)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For the full story of R\u00e6dwald, see my book,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/wuffings.co.uk\/index.php\/about-me\/the-reckoning-of-king-raedwald\/\">The Reckoning of King R\u00e6dwald<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conjectural full Old English spelling of his name may have been&nbsp;<em>(H)r\u00e6dwald<\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>(H)r\u00e6\u00f0wald<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is known to have received primary baptism in Kent, c.605, and on his return home, following the advice of his&nbsp;wife, he is said to have set up a temple of two altars, one to his ancestral gods and one to his new god (Bede, <em>HE<\/em>&nbsp;II, 15).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>R\u00e6dwald became High King of Britain after defeating \u00c6thelfrith, King of Northumbria, at the Battle of the River Idle, c.617 (<em>HE<\/em>&nbsp;II, 5, 12 &amp; 15). The site of this battle appears to have been at point where the Roman road from Lincoln to Doncaster crosses the River Idle near Bawtry.
