{"id":145,"date":"2014-01-23T17:20:47","date_gmt":"2014-01-23T17:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wuffings.co.uk\/?page_id=145"},"modified":"2014-02-10T14:57:51","modified_gmt":"2014-02-10T14:57:51","slug":"raedwald-died-c-625","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wuffings.co.uk\/index.php\/wuffings-who-was-who\/section-b-the-house-of-wuffa-down-to-the-mid-eighth-century\/raedwald-died-c-625\/","title":{"rendered":"R\u00c6DWALD (died c.625)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>R\u00c6DWALD (died c.625)<\/p>\n<p>For the full story of R\u00e6dwald, see my book, <em><a title=\"The Reckoning of King R\u00e6dwald\" href=\"http:\/\/wuffings.co.uk\/index.php\/about-me\/the-reckoning-of-king-raedwald\/\">The Reckoning of King R\u00e6dwald<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.4em;\">The conjectural full Old English spelling of his name may have been <em>Hr\u00e6dwald<\/em> or <em>Hr\u00e6\u00f0wald<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He is known to have received primary baptism in Kent, c.605, and on his return home, following the advice of his wife, he is said to have set up a temple of two altars, one to his ancestral gods and one to his new god (<em>HE<\/em> II, 15).<\/p>\n<p>R\u00e6dwald became High King of Britain after defeating \u00c6thelfrith, King of Northumbria, at the Battle of the River Idle, c.617 (<em>HE<\/em> II, 5, 12 &amp; 15). The site of this battle appears to have been at point where the Roman road from Lincoln to Doncaster crosses the River Idle near Bawtry.
